GOOD MORNING, CLASS OF '64

We've entered the fifties! We're shaking off an old decade and leaving the terrible twos behind us. Some of us will be beginning our threes this year, and some of us will turn four. The late forties that bred us has become history that may or may not interest us in coming years. But, our memories will be full of the fifties. These were our growing and knowing years.

 Square Dance Party Cake

Here's the 1950 recipe for Square Dance Party Cake from Dexo all-vegetable shortening.

1/2 cup Dexo (Crisco works, too)
2 cups sifted cake flour
2 1/12 tsp double-action baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 1/3 cups sugar
7/8 cup milk (1 cup minus 2 tbsp)
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs, unbeaten

Measure Dexo into bowl. Sift flour once, measure; add baking powder, salt, sugar; sift onto Dexo. Add vanilla to milk; add 2/3 milk; blend; beat 1 min. Add eggs and remaining milk; beat 2 1/2 min. Pour 1 3/4 cups batter into greased and floured 8 x 8 x2-inch pan. Bake in 350 F, for 30 min. When cool cut each layer in half. Arrange alternate colors to form 'squares.' Use butter frosting between layers, halves, sides and top. Dot with sweet chocolate.
